Last Saturday I decided to get us out of Ryan's way so he could work uninterrupted on the house. We found this great little family farm and apple orchard in Penrose, CO. My parents were up for the idea so we all went on a drive and had a really good time picking apples. The kids were both helpers and really got into it. It just feels good be outside working. Salome didn't mind the added bonus of getting to eat them too.. I think she ate about two and half apples by the time we were done.
Post freeze the apples were still on the tree and see to be in fine condition, but to be safe we went to my parent's house and made applesauce all day!
Wash, cut, cook, smash, pour, repeat.
The pro chef.
We ended up with lots of applesauce for the freezer and today I made a batch of apple butter. YUM! I have never tried canning by myself before this, but I have to say it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought. I have memories of my mom slaving over a hot stove all day and my sisters and I slicing, dicing, and pitting various things, so it was kind of nostalgic for me. Good times :)

Wish I could have participated. The apple butter, and the apple bread are both delicious! The applesauce isn't too shabby either.
